Bill Belichick doesn’t cross paths with Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien often, but he’s happy when he does.

The New England Patriots head coach talked NHL Winter Classic on Thursday, as the big game kicks off Friday at Gillette Stadium. Belichick also hit the ice with Julien, so he talked to reporters about his relationship with the hockey coach.

“I love Claude,” Belichick said. “He’s a great guy. I think we probably have a lot in common just in the way we coach and look at the game and look at the team and things like that. I mean, I don’t know anything about hockey, but it’s a pretty simple game — put the puck in the net. No, I love Claude and the job that he’s done.”

Belichick said he came to realize how similar they were just from their conversations over the years. And when Julien was asked about Belichick on Thursday, he echoed the Pats coach’s sentiments.

“It’s always great, always great to catch up with Bill,” Julien said. “I was fortunate enough to be a guest of his (Wednesday) at his practice, and we walked through it, and it was nice to see him work with his team. I’ve admired him for a long time for how he handles his team, how he coaches, how prepared he is.”
