Brad Marchand’s status for the NHL Winter Classic will be decided Wednesday.
The NHL announced the Boston Bruins winger will have a hearing for his low hit Tuesday on Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki.
The league referred to the hit as “clipping and interference,” and The Boston Globe’s Amalie Benjamin reported Tuesday, citing a league source, that Marchand “likely” will receive some sort of supplemental discipline.
The hearing is set for 4:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, according to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and ESPN.com. It will be a phone hearing, per Benjamin, capping a potential suspension at five games.
When speaking with the media after the game, which the Bruins won 7-3, Marchand said he did not intend to hit Borowiecki.
“It was simple play,” Marchand said. “I was trying to get to the puck-carrier, and I turned up ice, and (Borowiecki) was kind of standing there. I just turned up and tried to go after the puck-carrier.”
If Marchand is suspended, he would miss the Winter Classic, which is set for Friday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.
