Chip Kelly didn’t even make it to Black Monday.
The Philadelphia Eagles fired Kelly on Tuesday, as the team prepares for its Week 17 matchup against the New York Giants. The team announced the news in a press release, which states that Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie released Kelly from his duties as head coach.
“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,” Lurie said in the statement.
Lurie later released a longer statement, via the Eagles’ official Twitter account.
Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will coach the team Sunday against the Giants.
In almost three full seasons as the head coach in Philadelphia, Kelly posted a 26-21 record in 47 games. The Eagles won the NFC East in his first season, but they failed to qualify for the playoffs in his final two.
Vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz also was fired. Tom Donahoe, who has been a senior football advisor for Philadelphia since 2012, will take over as senior director of player personnel.
The team will hold a press conference on Wednesday at noon to address the news.
