The Carolina Panthers will be without their No. 1 running back for Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Jonathan Stewart won’t play in the undefeated team’s Week 15 game. Stewart sprained his left foot in Carolina’s 38-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons last week.

Rivera said a Charlotte, N.C.-based orthopedic specialist recommended Stewart rest at least one game, and the Panthers will be careful with the running back.

“We’re going to be smart about it,” Rivera said, per ESPN. “Doc’s not necessarily concerned, but he does think the foot needs to be rested.”

Stewart’s 989 rushing yards rank third in the NFL, and he has six rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown on the season. Fozzy Whittaker, Mike Tolbert and rookie Cameron Artis-Payne will take over in the backfield this week.
