Had negotiations transpired differently this past offseason, Matt Beleskey might have been wearing a red sweater Friday night in Calgary rather than a white one.
Beleskey, who signed a free-agent contract with the Boston Bruins on July 1, spoke before Boston’s matchup with the Flames about how he very well could have ended up in Calgary.
“It’s kind of weird,” Beleskey told the Calgary Herald before the Bruins’ 5-4 overtime loss at the Scotiabank Saddledome. “Free agency is a crazy day. We (Beleskey and the Flames) talked for a bit but they ended up signing (winger Michael) Frolik early in the day and that kind of crossed me off the list.
“But (Calgary is) definitely a city I’ve always loved coming to. It’s always fun to come back to Canada — I’m from here — but it’s definitely a good fit here (in Boston).”
Beleskey tormented the Flames last spring in his final days as an Anaheim Duck, scoring in all five games of the teams’ second-round playoff series. He lit the lamp again Friday night — snapping a streak of 13 consecutive games without a goal — and also added an assist in his first multi-point effort since Oct. 27.
“It was one of those things where I got on a roll and those goals just started coming,” the winger said Friday morning. “This year, it’s been little different to start but that’s something I’d like to start — maybe tonight even.”
Beleskey has three goals and nine assists in 22 games this season.
