Mercury Morris isn’t that impressed by the Carolina Panthers’ 12-0 record. The former Miami Dolphins running back also isn’t convinced the Panthers have what it takes to run the table.
Morris, a member of the 1972 Dolphins — the only team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl with a perfect season — and an outspoken individual, recently tipped his cap to Cam Newton and Co. when asked by TMZ Sports about Carolina’s chances of going undefeated this season. He warned everyone not to jump the gun, though, and did so by taking a shot at the 2007 New England Patriots.
“Go ask the Patriots how difficult it is to do it and how they feel about some little kid in Guatemala wearing those perfect 19-0 Super Bowl tees,” Morris told TMZ.
The Patriots, of course, went a perfect 16-0 in the regular season and won two playoff games during the 2007 season before losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. It remains to be seen whether Carolina will suffer a similar fate, but even if the Panthers go undefeated en route to Super Bowl glory, Morris isn’t sold on the idea of them being the best team ever. For him, there’s only one No.1.
“Do you know the second biggest canyon in the U.S.? No, because everyone only knows about the Grand Canyon,” Morris told TMZ. “No one cares about the second to do anything.”
