FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots will celebrate the New Year in south Florida.

The Patriots are heading south early before their Week 17 matchup with the Miami Dolphins because Gillette Stadium is hosting the NHL Winter Classic between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens. The Patriots will fly down to Miami on Thursday afternoon after practicing at Gillette Stadium. They’ll practice Friday at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.

“Yeah, we’ll be at Florida Atlantic,” head coach Bill Belichick said. “They’ve been great. They have a good program down there, good facilities. One of our coaches, Nick Caley, was there last year. It will certainly be as good as what we had last year in San Diego.”

The Patriots spent a week last season, practicing at the University of San Diego between their games against the Green Bay Packers and San Diego Chargers.
