Johnny Cueto reportedly has found a new home.
The free agent starter agreed to terms with the San Francisco Giants on Monday pending a physical, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported. Cueto’s contract allegedly is for six years and $130 million and has an opt out after two years, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.
Cueto was the last remaining “ace” pitcher on the free agent market. The 29-year-old right-hander’s agent said Cueto was hoping to sign with Boston, but the Red Sox landed left-hander David Price on a seven-year, $217 million deal.
The Giants now will trot out a rotation that includes Madison Bumgarner, Cueto, Jake Peavy, Jeff Samardzija and Matt Cain as they look to win their traditional even-year World Series in 2016. San Francisco also might have swiped Cueto from two other National League West teams, as he reportedly was in talks with the Los Angeles Dodgers and turned down a six-year, $120 million deal from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Cueto went 11-13 with a 3.44 ERA and 176 strikeouts between the Cincinnati Reds and World Series champion Kansas City Royals in 2015.
