The NFL doesn’t want to see any more officiating mistakes in the playoffs.
The league will conduct a conference call with top officials to discuss ways it can aid them during games once the playoffs begin, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday, citing sources.
The expected solution would be NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino communicating with officials during games. The league’s central officiating office in New York can see all the games in real time, and it would be much easier for them to correct mistakes while there’s only one game being played at a time during the playoffs.
The NFL has dealt with quite a few embarrassing officiating mistakes the season, from illegal bats to clock mistakes to officials accidentally applying college rules. The league has shown it doesn’t want those mistakes to happen on national games after reportedly moving a crew from “Sunday Night Football” to a late afternoon game between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, so it certainly will try to save face in the playoffs.
