In addition to a matchup between alumni squads from the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens, the lead-up to the 2016 Winter Classic also will include a professional women’s game, according to a report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
The Boston Pride of the National Women’s Hockey League and Les Canadiennes de Montreal of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League will square off Dec. 31 at Gillette Stadium, Friedman reported Saturday night.
The interleague women’s tilt reportedly will be held before the Winter Classic alumni game, with the Bruins-Canadiens main event set for 1 p.m. ET the following day.
The CWHL was founded in 2007, while the NWHL currently is in its first season of play. The reported New Year’s Eve showcase would be the first outdoor game in the history of either league, as well as the first instance of a team from one circuit playing an opponent from the other.
The festivities surrounding Boston’s last Winter Classic, held in 2010 at Fenway Park, featured the first-ever outdoor collegiate women’s game, with the University of New Hampshire knocking off Northeastern 5-3.
