Serena Williams was the subject of a silly controversy Monday, but at least she has a good sense of humor.

The No. 1-ranked tennis player was named Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsperson of the Year,” and some people on the Internet were baffled that the award went to a human and not Triple Crown-winning horse American Pharoah. So when Williams accepted her award Tuesday night, she took a little jab at the “debate.”

“I’m not standing here because I just kind of cruised on,” Williams said. “I’ve had my shares of ups and downs. I’ve had many struggles. I’ve had blood clots in both my lungs at the same time, and I’ve lived through tragedies and controversies — and horses.

“I had to say it. Basically, I’ve been through it all. I’m also a part-time comedian.”

All jokes aside, though, Williams’ speech was just as inspirational as it was lighthearted, and she really got down to why she deserved recognition for her legendary year.

“I had people put me down because I didn’t look like them,” Williams said. “I look stronger. I’ve had people look past me because of the color of my skin. I’ve had people overlook me because I was a woman. I had critics say I will never win another Grand Slam when I was only at No. 7. Now, here I stand today with 21 Grand Slam titles, and I’m still going.”
