BOSTON — Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid had to be helped off the ice and into the locker room after taking a hard hit from behind in Tuesday night’s game against the Washington Capitals at TD Garden.

The play occurred early in the second period when Capitals forward Zach Sill hit McQuaid along the boards in the Bruins’ zone. McQuaid’s head appeared to slam against the glass as a result of the contact. The Bruins D-man laid on the ice for a few minutes as the team’s training staff attended to him.

Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron stuck up for his teammate and went after Sill. No penalties were called on either team.

McQuaid has dealt with numerous injuries in his NHL career, but he entered Tuesday having played in all 37 of Boston’s games this season.
