Serena Williams looked invincible in Melbourne this month, but her pursuit of a record-tying 22nd Grand Slam singles title came up a bit short Saturday when she lost in the 2016 Australian Open final to Angelique Kerber.

Kerber, who won 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, becomes the first German woman to win the Australian Open since Steffi Graf in 1994. Graf’s 22 Grand Slam singles titles are a record in the open era.

This is the second straight Grand Slam tournament Williams hasn’t won. She suffered a shocking upset defeat at last year’s U.S. Open semifinal in New York, where she could have secured a historic Grand Slam with a victory.

The next Grand Slam tournament is the French Open at Roland Garros. It begins May 22.
