Brett Favre and Terrell Owens are one step closer to Canton.
Favre, Owens and 13 other players were named modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2016 on Thursday. Favre, Owens and Alan Faneca all made the final cut on their first tries.
Joining them are Morten Andersen, Steve Atwater, Don Coryell, Terrell Davis, Tony Dungy, Kevin Greene, Marvin Harrison, Joe Jacoby, Edgerrin James, John Lynch, Orlando Pace and Kurt Warner. Ken Stabler, Dick Stanfel and Edward DeBartolo, Jr. already were being considered for the Hall of Fame as senior finalists and contributors.
One notable semifinalist left off the final list was former New England Patriots cornerback Ty Law. This is the second time Law has been named a semifinalist but failed to make the final cut.
The Hall’s Selection Committee will choose the Class of 2016 the day before Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco. Finalists need at least 80 percent of the vote in that meeting to make the Hall of Fame.
