MASHANTUCKET, Conn. — Brock Holt walked on stage and pointed in Wade Boggs’ direction. Boggs pointed back, kicking off an emotional ceremony that culminated with Holt returning what rightfully belongs to the Hall of Fame third baseman.

Holt took off his No. 26 jersey Friday night and placed it back on Boggs during the Red Sox Town Hall event at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Boggs’ No. 26, of course, will be retired by the Boston Red Sox this season at Fenway Park, more than 23 years after his final game with the organization.

“Having a person’s number retired is not a right. It’s a privilege,” Boggs said, filling up with tears. “This is, other than the birth of my children and marriage to my wife, Debbie, the greatest day of my life.”

Holt, who has worn No. 26 the last three seasons with the Red Sox, will wear No. 12 moving forward. No one will ever don No. 26 for Boston ever again.

Tune in to Red Sox Town Hall on NESN on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m.
