No, Cam Newton’s practice shirt wasn’t a reflection of his confidence, though the Carolina Panthers quarterback certainly has plenty of that. It was a revelation.

Newton sported a shirt Thursday in the Panthers’ locker room that said “Chosen” across the back with his No. 1 underneath. According to ESPN’s David Newton, it’s the name of the quarterback’s son, who was born Christmas Eve but whose name had been a mystery to this point.

Newton and his longtime girlfriend, Kia Proctor, were quiet about the pregnancy, with the QB tweeting in late December that he wanted to avoid having their joyous time become a distraction for the Panthers. He also hasn’t publicly discussed his newborn son’s unique name, though his teammates told ESPN he’s enjoying life as a dad.

“It’s a pretty special thing to have your own children,” Panthers wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery told ESPN. “It does change you. You have to look at things differently. You have to provide for someone.

“I can attest to one thing, he’s happy to be a dad. He’s a proud dad.”

Newton sure has looked like “the chosen one” this season. Maybe someday Chosen Newton will follow in his father’s footsteps and have a successful NFL career.
