Danny Amendola isn’t on good terms with his neighbors right now.
The New England Patriots wide receiver put up a metal carport at his home in Providence, R.I.’s, College Hill Historic District to make sure he can get to practice in the event of a snowstorm. But his neighbors think the structure at the 1774 home on Benefit Street is an eyesore.
“It’s a simple utilitarian structure, but if you had tons of these around the neighborhood, it would significantly detract from the historic quality and aesthetic appearance of the Benefit Street neighborhood,” neighbor Tim More said, per The Associated Press.
The Patriots are notoriously strict about players missing or being late for practice, even if it’s weather-related, so it’s no wonder Amendola would want to pull out all the stops to make sure he doesn’t wind up on the bench. Not to mention, he plans to take the carport down in February. Amendola declined to comment about it at Patriots practice Wednesday.
Still, neighbor Ray Rickman, who’s also a former member of Providence’s Historic District Commission, told The AP he wonders why Amendola doesn’t just get a canvas for his car and hire a snow-removal service. And as for the discontent, Rickman said it’s just rich people being rich people.
“Wealthy people like to buy things and have their way,” Rickman said. “Historic districts are fragile.”
Rickman also said he likes having Amendola in the neighborhood, but apparently, he’d be a lot more helpful if quarterback Tom Brady lived there instead.
“I hope that he’ll stay,” Rickman told The AP. “This city needs celebrities. I think it’s cool. I think it would cooler if Tom Brady lived here. I would offer to help him shovel his snow.”
