The Toledo Walleye of the ECHL plan to be as fashionable on the ice as Don Cherry is off it.

The Walleye, an affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, announced Wednesday on Instagram their plans to wear checkered jerseys Jan. 23. The bold wardrobe strategy is Toledo’s way of paying tribute to Cherry, who’s known as much for his crazy suits as he is for his hockey analysis or his NHL coaching career.

Cherry, who currently works as an analyst for CBC, guided the Boston Bruins to the playoffs in each of his five seasons at the helm from 1974 to 1979. He’s since become one of the most interesting characters in sports broadcasting, which the Walleye evidently would like to acknowledge in style.

Hopefully, the man known as “Grapes” approves.
