The most memorable moment of Hall of Famer Mike Piazza’s career was much more than a home run.
Life as we knew it, including sports events, came to a sudden halt after the horrific terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. And while things never will be the same after that day, Piazza did his best to help New York City and the nation heal when the Mets returned to Shea Stadium on Sept. 21, 2001.
The Atlanta Braves held a slim 2-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the eighth inning when Piazza stepped up to the plate with a runner on. What the newly elected member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame did next likely still will send chills down your spine.
That home run proved to be the difference in the Mets’ 3-2 win, but it did much more than that.
