Jon Flanagan is in contention for a return to the first-team squad, as Jurgen Klopp confirmed Liverpool will once again shuffle the pack for Wednesday’s FA Cup third-round game with Exeter City at Anfield.

The fullback has returned to fitness following a knee injury that ruled him out of the entire 2014-15 season and the opening months of the current campaign.

In recent weeks, Flanagan has turned out for the Reds’ U21 side and is now on the brink of a senior return for the first time since May 2014 in Wednesday’s FA Cup third-round replay with the Grecians.

“Jon is in a really good way and we’re all happy about this,” Klopp told reporters.

“He is not (ready) for the starting lineup, but if nothing happens and he feels good then he will be on the bench. If there is a situation then we will bring him (on) of course. It has really been a long time for him.

“I think now it’s the first step back for him to breathe in and feel Anfield; being back in the dressing room, not in a suit but a tracksuit, so it’s a good, good step for him. If nobody tells me something different, he will be in the squad.”
