Florida Panthers color commentator and Hall of Fame goaltender Denis Potvin apologized Wednesday for calling Vancouver Canucks star Daniel Sedin “a low life” during Monday’s television broadcast.
Sedin appeared to stare down the Panthers’ bench after scoring the overtime game-winner in a 3-2 Canucks victory. A full-team skirmish ensued, prompting Potvin to bash the three-time NHL All-Star with words he later acknowledged were uncalled for.
“My choice of words at the conclusion of the Vancouver game on Monday should have been more appropriate,” Potvin said in a statement released by the Panthers. “In the passion of the moment and under the circumstances of how the game ended, they came out wrong. For that I’m going to extend my sincere apologies to Daniel Sedin, Trevor Linden and the Canucks organization.”
In addition to his “low life” dig, Potvin also used some stranger comments to describe Daniel and Henrik Sedin’s actions during the scuffle.
“Oh my God, and now the Sedins are pointing fingers,” Potvin said. “Usually they only use those fingers to lick the peanut butter off of their bread.”
It remains unclear exactly what sparked the scrap, and Henrik Sedin declined to offer any insight into the matter when meeting with reporters Wednesday.
“It’s always great to see a team stick up for one another,” the Canucks captain said, via The Associated Press. “We forgot about it right away. It’s not a big deal. There were things said, we won the game, we moved on.”
The overtime loss snapped a 12-game winning streak for the Panthers, who entered Wednesday with a six-point lead atop the Atlantic Division.
