Rumors are swirling about the future of the Indianapolis Colts’ leadership, but it seems coach Chuck Pagano’s head is the one on the chopping block.
Should it be, though? According to WTHR’s Bob Kravitz, while Pagano certainly has his faults, it’s general manager Ryan Grigson that probably deserves to be looking over his shoulder.
Kravitz cited sources that told him Grigson is a “terrible meddler,” and that he constantly and consistently undermines Pagano’s authority as coach of the team.
Kravitz lists a few examples that the source shared, including Pagano not being allowed to discipline players for being late, but one in particular takes that cake.
“Grigson, who traded a first-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for running back Trent Richardson, continued to insist that Richardson play, and even start, despite the running back’s weight issues and obvious lack of production,” Kravitz wrote. “According to sources, Grigson was concerned with creating the narrative that it was a good trade, something it clearly was not.”
Kravitz adds that the four bulleted examples he gives in the story are “just a snapshot, a small sampling of the areas where Grigson strong-armed Pagano.”
Micromanaging is something most working adults will face at least once in their careers, but to do so at such extreme lengths makes completing a task nearly impossible.
Franchise quarterback in place or not, we wouldn’t be surprised if Pagano is hoping to get fired at this point. What a mess.
