It looks as though there’s a reason Malcolm Butler skipped this year’s Pro Bowl.

Seven New England Patriots were selected to the 2016 Pro Bowl, but none of them elected to attend. But out of Tom Brady, Chandler Jones, Jamie Collins, Matthew Slater, Rob Gronkowski and Stephen Gostkowski, Butler’s absence was a bit surprising considering he hadn’t spent any time injured like his teammates.

But apparently, Butler was injured.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Sunday that the Patriots cornerback suffered a knee injury during New England’s 20-18 AFC Championship loss to the Denver Broncos. Butler’s injury isn’t bad enough that he’ll need surgery, according to Reiss, but the team wanted him to rest.

This was Butler’s first Pro Bowl selection in the second-year corner’s young career. Butler played all 16 games this season with 67 combined tackles and 2 interceptions.
