Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic campaign, now just months away, is getting the living daylights kicked out of it in the press right now — which is bad, because they’re going to need that daylight.
Apparently Rio’s Nilton Santos Stadium, which will host track and field events, has been without electricity or running water for months due to an ongoing dispute between the city of Rio and soccer club Botafogo, according to a report from The Associated Press.
The dispute is centered around who is responsible for unpaid bills, which the city told The AP had been Botafogo’s responsibility since May 2015. In a similar statement, Botafogo told The AP that the city government owed it money to pay the bills.
“We have to find out who is responsible for the debt,” the club said.
The bills reportedly total approximately $250,000.
