Reports: Dolphins To Interview Mike Shanahan For Open Head Coach Position

The AFC East might be adding some Super Bowl rings.

The Miami Dolphins will interview veteran head coach Mike Shanahan on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. The meeting will actually be the second between the two sides, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who reports Shanahan and the Dolphins already met on Dec. 22.

Shanahan is among a number of potential candidates the Dolphins reportedly are considering to replace Dan Campbell, who took over as interim coach when the Dolphins fired Joe Philbin in early October. Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin also will get an interview, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Shanahan is obviously the biggest name reportedly on the radar at the moment, though. The 63-year-old got his first head coaching job all the way back in 1988 and has spent parts of 20 seasons as a head man. Most notably, Shanahan spent 14 seasons with the Denver Broncos, whom he led to two Super Bowl titles and guided to a .616 winning percentage.

Most recently, Shanahan spent four largely unsuccessful seasons with Washington. The Redskins won just 24 of 64 games under Shanahan with one winning season.

In addition to the Dolphins’ job, Rapoport reported Shanahan is interested in the openings in both Philadelphia and San Francisco.
