Doug Pederson is coming back to Philadelphia, but this time he’ll wear a headset instead of a helmet.

The former Eagles quarterback and current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator will be hired as the team’s new head coach, a league source told the Philadelphia Daily News’ Les Bowen on Thursday and other outlets reported. Pederson will replace Chip Kelly, who has since taken the reins in San Francisco as the 49ers’ head coach.

Pederson played in parts of 10 seasons with the Eagles, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns. One of his most successful seasons came in 1999 in Philadelphia, where he started nine games and completed 62.9 percent of his passes.

Pederson’s NFL career ended in 2004, after which he became the head coach at Calvary Baptist Academy in West Virginia from 2005 to 2008. He joined the Eagles’ coaching staff in 2009, and he was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2011. He left for Kansas City in 2013 to take over as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Pederson’s hiring came shortly after former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin withdrew his name from consideration for the position.
