Sepp Blatter is sipping from FIFA’s gravy train, despite having been thrown off the rails three-and-a-half months ago.
A spokesman for FIFA’s Audit and Compliance Committee on Monday confirmed to Reuters that FIFA continues to pay Blatter his presidential salary as he serves an eight-year ban. Blatter will receive his salary until FIFA elects a new president next month.
“Until the election of a new president on Feb. 26, Mr Blatter is the elected president and therefore — according to his contract — is entitled to receive his remuneration,” Andreas Bantel told Reuters.
However, Blatter’s post-ban compensation doesn’t include any bonuses he would have received, since he no longer is performing his duties at world soccer’s governing body.
FIFA continues to refuse to publish or publicize exactly how much it pays Blatter.
FIFA on Oct. 8 provisionally suspended Blatter for 90 days for ethics violations relating to a $2 million payment to advisor Michel Platini. After investigating allegations, FIFA officially banned Blatter from all soccer activities for a long term on Dec. 21, effectively ending his presidency, which began in 1998.
Blatter will appeal his FIFA ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in an effort to attend FIFA’s presidential election and hand over power.
Regardless of how judges rule on his appeal, Blatter will remain in the money for the next few pay periods.
After that, he’ll be on his own.
