FOXBORO, Mass. — It was just “a little miscommunication” that led Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels to be caught on TV yelling at each other before embracing in a big hug.

Brady rolled to his right after leading the New England Patriots into the red zone and scrambled 10 yards late in the second quarter of Saturday’s 27-20 divisional-round playoff win over the Kansas City Chiefs. It appeared Brady might have reached the ball over the goal line before going out of bounds, though he was ruled out at the 1-yard line. The quarterback wanted to challenge the play and hadn’t heard from his offensive coordinator.

“I don’t remember exactly — I wanted us to challenge it, because we were going to call a timeout,” Brady said. “So, even if we challenge it, we were still going to get the timeout. He said, ‘Well, that’s what we were doing.’ I said, ‘Why didn’t you let me know?’ So, it was just a little miscommunication.”

Wide receiver Julian Edelman was spotted laughing in the background

“I don’t know. They’re funny,” Edelman said. “It’s just something I giggled at. It was a funny time.”

The Patriots lost the challenge, but Brady scored on a 1-yard leap over the goal line on the next play.

“It’s just football,” Brady said. “There’s a lot of emotions, especially in this game. He’s done the best job. He’s an incredible coach. I’m lucky to have him. It was great to get it in there. We laughed about it three minutes later.”

Brady has worked with McDaniels for 12 of his 15 seasons in the NFL, so any dispute they have likely will be short-lived.

“Aren’t they like the same age? They’re like twin brothers,” Edelman said. “Josh is such a smart, innovative offensive coordinator. Tom’s a smart guy. He’s been in this system for a while. It’s great to see the relationship they have, because they can bounce off each other, and they can talk that language. They have a great working relationship. It’s just funny to see sometimes.”

Oh, and Edelman’s thoughts on Brady’s 10-yard scramble?

“Anytime the clydesdale gets running, the crowd goes crazy,” Edelman said.

A loud “BRA-DY, BRA-DY, BRA-DY” chant broke out after the big run, so Edelman wasn’t lying.
