Only Alan Shearer has scored more goals in England’s Premier League than Wayne Rooney has.

Rooney made second place on the Premier League’s all-time leading scorers’ list his own Saturday. Rooney scored the game winner in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City, moving himself past Andrew Cole with his 188th career goal in England’s top flight.

Rooney’s latest strike also was among his more spectacular goal-scoring efforts. He redirected Anthony Martial’s pass into the goal with a tidy back-heel flick.

Rooney trails Shearer by some distance. Rooney needs 72 goals to match the 260 Shearer scored for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle between 1992 and 2006, but time isn’t on the Manchester United captain’s side.

The goal Rooney scored Saturday was his first in league play since Oct. 17.

Meanwhile, Rooney’s pursuit of Sir Bobby Charlton’s record for most goals in a Manchester United uniform continues.
