Alex Morgan ensured the United States Women’s National Soccer Team didn’t wait long to start handling its serious business.
Morgan scored just 12 seconds into Team USA’s 5-0 win over Costa Rica on Wednesday in their opening game in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Team USA announced Morgan’s goal was the fastest in U.S. Soccer history, and CONCACAF crowned it the fastest in Women’s Olympic qualifying history.
Lindsey Horan started the scoring sequence by passing long to Carli Lloyd, who won the header and flicked the ball toward Costa Rica’s goal. Morgan ran onto Lloyd’s header and thumped the volley past goalkeeper Dinnia Diaz.
Morgan added another goal in the second half, as the U.S. won in a rout.
The win over Costa Rica was Team USA’s first competitive game since its triumph in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Morgan now has 59 goals in 101 games for Team USA and she seems like she’s in a hurry to accumulate more of both.
