NHL fans really shouldt appreciate Alexander Ovechkin because it’s possible we might never see a better goal scorer in our lifetime.

The Washington Capitals captain scored a hat trick in the second period of his team’s 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. It was his 14th career hat trick, and it moved him ahead of Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane for the league lead in goals with 34.

Ovi’s 14 hat tricks are the most among all players since his 2005-06 rookie campaign. He also has a league-high 105 multi-goal games over that span, much more than Jarome Iginla (69) and Sidney Crosby (66) in second and third place.

Ovechkin also passed Montreal Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau for 39th place on the NHL’s all-time goals scored list. The Capitals winger now has 509 career tallies.

The Capitals became the first team this season to reach the 40-win mark.
