Like many others Sunday night, Brooks Laich and his fiancée, actress Julianne Hough, enjoyed the biggest award show of the year, the Oscars.
However, while Laich watched “Spotlight” and other movies win big at the Academy Awards, the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs worked on a trade that impacted his immediate future.
The Capitals traded the 32-year-old center, defenseman Connor Carrick and their 2016 second-round draft pick to the Leafs in exchange for forward Daniel Winnik and a 2016 fifth-round pick.
It might not take long for Laich to return to Washington, though, as the Capitals host the Leafs on Wednesday.
