Canadiens’ Twitter Promotion Celebrating 1 Million Followers Turns Disastrous

The Montreal Canadiens, like the New England Patriots back in 2014, reached one million Twitter followers Tuesday, and they decided to celebrate the occasion with customized tweets thanking their fans.

The tweets were set up as direct replies to the followers, and they included a mix of video messages from Canadiens players and jerseys with the person’s Twitter handle on the back.

But the promotion took an ugly turn due to some offensive Twitter handles. The tweets come with a strong warning, but you can see some examples on Deadspin and Toronto Star sports columnist Bruce Arthur’s account. And while we expect the tweets to be taken down eventually, you can see other examples in the Canadiens’ replies.
