A former All-Star has joined the Boston Red Sox’s spring training mix.
The Red Sox announced Tuesday that they’ve added right-hander Carlos Marmol as a non-roster invitee to the club’s 2016 spring training roster. Marmol has spent nine seasons in the majors, even earning an All-Star selection with the Chicago Cubs in 2008.
Marmol, 33, posted a 1.43 ERA in 59 relief appearances spanning 69 1/3 innings in his first season as a full-time reliever in 2007. He had a 2.68 ERA and a career-best 0.93 WHIP in 82 relief appearances over 87 1/3 innings in 2008, paving the way for him to spend time as Chicago’s closer.
Marmol recorded a career-high 38 saves in 2010, a year in which he also struck out a career-high 16 batters per nine innings. He struggled a bit in subsequent seasons, though, and the Cubs eventually traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2013.
Marmol last appeared in the majors with the Miami Marlins in 2014, posting an 8.10 ERA over 13 1/3 innings. He spent the 2015 season at Triple-A Columbus in the Cleveland Indians organization, going 3-1 with 13 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 28 outings spanning 31 innings.
The Red Sox now have invited a total of 16 players to major league spring training camp as non-roster invitees.
