The NBA trade rumor mill went into full gear Friday night when the New York Daily News reported the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics had discussions involving a deal that would send Kevin Love to Boston.
Cavaliers superstar forward LeBron James was asked about the rumor Saturday while at NBA All-Star Weekend in Toronto, and he threw some water on the fire.
You wouldn’t expect James to say anything different. He’s not going to throw a teammate under the bus publicly or discuss any real trade discussions because it could hurt the process. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday, Feb. 18.
Perhaps the juiciest part of this trade rumor was that the deal could involve a third team, the New York Knicks, who would be sending all-star forward Carmelo Anthony to Cleveland.
It’s always difficult to determine the validity of these kinds of rumors, especially one that includes multiple superstars with enormous salaries.
What we do know is the Cavaliers need to improve their roster to have any chance of beating the Golden State Warriors or San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, the Celtics are looking for a superstar to add to their young core and the Knicks are in a rebuild.
A trade that sends Love to Boston, Anthony to Cleveland and draft picks and/or players to New York would be a win for all involved, so it’s not that far-fetched of a trade, at least on paper.
