Doug Martin Really Would Like You To Stop Calling Him ‘Muscle Hamster’ (Video)

SAN FRANCISCO — Don’t call Doug Martin “Muscle Hamster.” Seriously.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back burst on to the scene in 2012 with 1,454 rushing yards in his rookie season, earning the “Muscle Hamster” moniker along the way. Now that he’s established himself as one of the game’s best running backs, he wants to get the message out: He hates that nickname.

Martin instead prefers “Dougernaut,” or, you know, Doug Martin. And after another terrific season — 1,402 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns — he’s kind of earned the right to shoot down any and all nicknames referring to small, furry rodents.

Martin spoke to’s Michaela Vernava about his nickname while also taking a look at a divisional rival, the Carolina Panthers, ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl 50.
