It looks like it’s finally time to put any and all Cliff Lee rumors to bed.
The veteran left-handed pitcher is expected to retire, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday.
“We don’t anticipate him playing at this point,” Lee’s agent, Darek Braunecker, told Rosenthal.
The 37-year-old southpaw hasn’t pitched since July of 2014 after suffering a torn tendon in his throwing elbow. He’s currently a free agent after the Philadelphia Phillies bought out his option for the 2016 season.
If Lee is indeed done, it will be an unfortunate end to a career that featured flashes of brilliance. Lee won the American League Cy Young award in 2008 with the Cleveland Indians behind a 22-3 record and a league-leading 2.54 ERA. Lee’s finest season, however, might have come in 2011 with the Philadelphia Phillies. He finished third in Cy Young voting with a 17-8 record to go along with a tidy 2.40 ERA and a league-leading six complete games.
