When a washed-up former athlete tries his hand at NFL Scouting Combine drills, the results usually aren’t pretty.
But it appears Heath Evans is anything but washed up, particularly when it comes to one NFL draft measurable.
Evans, who carved out a 10-year career as an NFL fullback that included four seasons with the New England Patriots, now is an analyst for NFL Network. During the network’s coverage of the combine in Indianapolis, Evans decided to see how his strength stacked up against current draft prospects in the bench press by getting under the bar in his full suit and tie.
He then proceeded to blow everyone out of the water.

Evans cranked out an incredible 37 reps. In case you’re wondering how that compares, Northwestern’s Dan Vitale and Nebraska’s Andy Janovich led all running backs with 30 reps each. In fact, Evans’ mark would have been the highest total so far at this year’s combine, as the top offensive lineman, Arizona State’s Christian Waterman, tallied 34 reps.
To be fair to this year’s crop, the 37-year-old Evans has filled out a bit over the years, and he “only” managed 30 reps during his own combine appearance in 2001. Still, doing that many reps in a shirt and tie is quite impressive, as was Evans’ 4.82 40-yard dash time he posted while running on concrete.
