Like many fans of the Boston Celtics, Kevin Garnett longs for banner No. 18 to this very day.
Minnesota Timberwolves center Gorgui Dieng revealed as much Thursday when he said Garnett still is angry about the Celtics’ loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2010 NBA Finals, according to The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.
Dieng said Garnett, 39, constantly harps on the narrow defeat, which cost him a chance to celebrate a second championship in his 21-plus-year NBA career.
“He always talks about the (2010) Finals they lost,” Dieng said. “I think he can’t swallow that pill. He always talks about it. You can see how angry he is when he talks about that Finals.”
The Celtics were leading the series 3-2, but the Lakers came back to claim the final two games and the title on their home court. Garnett remains at a loss to explain what happened.
“They were great and they were going to win it,” Dieng said, “and he still doesn’t understand why they lost.”
The demises of Kendrick Perkins and Rasheed Wallace due to injury and age, respectively, are good starting points.
But Garnett probably doesn’t want to hear about that, and we’re not trying to reason with him.
