This weekend we found out the one thing Mookie Betts might not be amazing at: driving a golf cart.
The Boston Red Sox center fielder was out golfing in Florida with teammates and infielders Travis Shaw and Deven Marrero on Sunday when the golf cart he was driving wound up in a pond. Marrero posted a couple of pretty hilarious videos of the incident on Twitter, and Betts clarified that he didn’t drive it into the pond, but rather it rolled in there.
But, still. How?
“I left my club on the last hole, and I went back to get it,” Betts told reporters Monday in Fort Myers, Fla., per WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “Parked on a hill. Thought I pushed the brake, but it didn’t brake, obviously. I didn’t push it all the way in. I ran to get my club, and by the time I turned around, it was going in the pond. That’s pretty much it.”
Luckily, Betts said his accident didn’t do too much damage (though we’re not sure those in charge of the course feel the same way).
“That was probably one of the most helpless I felt,” Betts said. “I don’t know how you want to say it, but there was nothing I could do. I couldn’t pull it out, couldn’t salvage anything. Well, we got our wallets, didn’t get our phones, but got our keys. We didn’t really lose anything but phones.”
As for any future golf outings, though, Betts is planning on letting someone else take the wheel.
“I’m done driving,” Betts said, per Bradford. “I’ll just let everyone else take over. I may just walk. It may be better.”
