Pro wrestling legend Bret “The Hitman” Hart is about to take on the fight of his life.
The WWE Hall of Famer announced Monday he’s battling prostate cancer. Hart made the announcement on social media, saying he’ll now face his “toughest battle.” Hart will undergo surgery in the coming days “with the hope of defeating this nemesis once and for all.”

“I make a solemn vow to all of those that once believed in me, the dead and the living, that I will wage my fearsome fight against cancer with one shield and one sword carrying my determination and my fury for life, emboldened by all the love that’s kept me going this long already. Love is my weapon and I’ve got much of it around me all the time, for which I’m truly blessed and eternally grateful. My children, grandchildren, and my loving wife Steph have been and will constantly be at my side. I refuse to lose, I will never give in or give up, and I will win this battle or die trying.”

This is just the latest in a cruel line of bad luck for Hart since leaving WWE. His brother, Owen, tragically died at the age of 34 after falling from the ceiling in a stunt gone wrong at a then-WWF show in 1999. Hart’s brother-in-law, Davey Boy Smith, died shortly thereafter in 2002 after suffering a heart attack. He was just 39.
Hart’s own physical issues, including a stroke in 2002, have been well documented over the years.
