It’s beginning to look like a lost season for the Montreal Canadiens, and the latest news regarding goalie Carey Price could be the death knell.
Montreal newspaper La Presse reported Friday that Price’s knee injury could keep him out for the season. At the very least, Price won’t return any time soon, and there’s not a whole lot of optimism within the organization.
“According to our sources, the Habs aren’t counting on a regular-season return for their star goalie, who has been out of action since November with a right knee injury, an injury that management refuses to acknowledge,” the French-speaking paper reported, as translated on HabsEyeOnThePrize.com.
“From what we’ve learned, the reigning Vezina winner could, in an optimistic scenario, aim for a return toward the end of the season, in time for the playoffs.”
Of course, the playoffs look more and more like a long shot with every day that passes. Montreal is three points behind Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh for the two Eastern Conference wild-card spots. Making matters worse, both the Lightning and Penguins have two games in hand over Montreal. The New Jersey Devils also hold a three-point lead over the Habs for the No. 9 spot.
“The possibility of Carey Price returning this season are so slim that people in the organization don’t even believe it’ll happen,” La Presse added, per ProHockeyTalk.com.
