Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, but he’s staying modest.
The New England Patriots signal-caller solidified his standing as one of the greats by winning his fourth Super Bowl in 2014, but he doesn’t see himself as high up in the ranks as others do. Westwood One Radio’s Jim Gray asked Brady if he considered himself to be one of the best at his position, and Brady named plenty of others he thinks are better.
“That is a hell of a question, and I wouldn’t put myself in there,” Brady said, via WEEI.com. “I think there’s some incredible players that have played the position, and a lot of guys do things differently to get the job done. You see different styles, different techniques. When you look at me being a fan of Joe Montana — nobody ever did it better than Joe Montana. In a way he was like the Michael Jordan of football. The style and the grace and the beauty of what Joe’s style was, it never looked hard for Joe.”
Brady also added Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and Cam Newton to the list of quarterbacks who he thinks make football look easy. For Brady, he’s just glad he’s in the conversation at all.
“It’s more than I could have ever imagined growing up as a kid on Portola Drive in San Mateo, California,” Brady said. “I used to throw the ball in the Candlestick Park parking lot and third lot — just loved played in the street with my friends and drawing up plays on pieces of paper and memorizing them with my neighbors across the street. I couldn’t have ever imagined my life being what it has become.
“Hopefully the journey is not over, I still feel like I have more to achieve as a player. I still feel like I have more things to prove to myself. I look forward to those opportunities down the road.”
