The Toronto Maple Leafs will have a new(ish) look next season.
The Maple Leafs unveiled their new primary logo Tuesday after the team’s overtime win over the Boston Bruins. The new logo won’t go into effect until the 2016-17 season (the club’s centennial season).
“As an organization, we wanted to get back to our roots, when Conn Smythe first changed the team logo to the Maple Leaf in 1927,” Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said in a statement Tuesday night. “Inspired by the badge that he and his fellow Canadian soldiers wore during World War I, Smythe wanted his team to wear the badge with ‘honor, pride and courage.’ This is our goal for the next chapter in Leafs history. We are committed to restoring the Toronto Maple Leafs to a proud and prominent place and this classic logo will connect the team’s championship legacy with an exciting and proud future for our players, our city and for our fans.”
The Maple Leafs also are going to unveil new uniforms in conjunction with the new logo. It’s unclear how much will change other than the primary logo, but the Leafs said Tuesday night the new sweater will be revealed at the 2016 NHL Draft in June.
