BOSTON — The Boston Bruins honored head coach Claude Julien before Thursday’s game against the Florida Panthers. Earlier this month, Julien tied and then surpassed legendary coach Art Ross as the winningest coach in club history.
Bruins alternate captain Patrice Bergeron, who is one of just four Bruins to have been with the club for Julien’s entire Boston tenure, reflected on how the coach has aided the four-time All-Star and three-time Selke Trophy winner.
“Ever since he came here, he kind of thought me to be a better player on both sides of the ice and really helped me develop as a leader as well off the ice,” Bergeron told reporters at TD Garden. “He’s meant a lot to me and to a lot of guys in this dressing room. He deserves every recognition that he’s gotten over the years and probably more. He’s definitely the best coach I’ve ever had, and I owe him a lot.”
Bergeron wasn’t the only one to pay tribute to Julien. The Bruins tracked down a ton of Boston legends — including New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, former Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers and Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz — to send well wishes to the B’s coach.
Among the gifts Julien received? A trip for him, his wife and their three children to Disney World. It was quite an evening for the Julien clan.
