The New England Patriots were finalists for Marvin Jones, who could wind up being the top-paid free-agent wide receiver to hit the market this offseason.

Jones told NFL Media’s Mike Silver that his decision came down to sign with the Patriots, Detroit Lions, or his former team, the Cincinnati Bengals. Jones ultimately chose to sign with the Lions, who will pay him around than $8 million per year, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The Patriots have expressed interest in signing free-agent wideout Rishard Matthews, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. They also reportedly have reached out to former Bengals receiver Mohamed Sanu.

The Patriots have wide receivers Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Keshawn Martin, Aaron Dobson, Chris Harper and Matthew Slater under contract for the 2016 season. Their need for a starting-caliber receiver increased when they released Brandon LaFell last week.
