The Missouri House of Representatives is getting some really important things done.
Rep. Courtney Allen Curtis recently proposed a bill to designate the St. Louis Cardinals as the state’s official baseball team, noting the team can “can trace its history in Missouri back to 1882.” However, House bill No. 2831 completely ignores the fact that there’s a second baseball team in Missouri.
Yup, the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals.
Needless to say, Royals fans aren’t too happy about the bill and took to Twitter on Thursday to express their displeasure. And Rep. Curtis didn’t exactly help make things better.
Rep. Curtis did tweet out a poll, though, and it might not end well for the Cardinals, if you remember Kansas City fans’ voting record.
The Cardinals’ history indeed began in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings, and they’ve been the Cardinals since 1900. They have 11 World Series titles, with their most recent coming in 2011. The Royals got their start in the state as an expansion team in 1969 and have won two World Series. The team’s close proximity to, and occasional association with, the state of Kansas also probably doesn’t help its cause in the Show Me State.
Luckily for the fans, the bill hasn’t passed yet and wouldn’t go into effect until August if it does, per HardballTalk, so both teams have a chance to make their case for the crown.
