ORIGINAL STORY: While it’s not exactly a splash, the New England Patriots reportedly dipped a toe into the free-agency waters.

The Patriots have reached an agreement with free-agent linebacker Ramon Humber on a one-year contract, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Wednesday.

Humber, 28, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of North Dakota State with the Indianapolis Colts in 2009. He was with the New Orleans Saints from 2010 t0 2015, where he served primarily as a special-teamer and a backup linebacker.

The 5-foot-11, 232-pound defender had 47 tackles and one sack in 14 games and four starts last season. He has 194 career tackles and 3.5 sacks in seven NFL seasons.

Humber will join linebackers Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Jonathan Freeny, Jon Bostic, Eric Martin, Kevin Snyder and Brandon King on the Patriots’ roster. The Patriots also have linebacker James Vaughters signed to a future/reserve contract.

UPDATE (Wednesday, 4:50 p.m. ET): The move is official, per the NFL transaction wire.
