Vicente Del Bosque is one of the soccer world’s elder statesmen, but he’s just learning the perils of roaming the sidelines at this latter stage of his career.

A referee’s assistant plowed over del Bosque on Thursday in the first half of Spain’s exhibition game against Italy. Del Bosque was standing well inside his technical area when the official ran into him at full speed.

Del Bosque, 65, joined the soccer world in chuckling at his misfortune, and he shook hands with the offending referee’s assistant. Winning the FIFA World Cup and two UEFA European Championships, as del Bosque has done, affords one such a luxury.

It’s a good thing this game isn’t part of an official competition. Otherwise, del Bosque might have considered staying down in order to help his team gain an advantage.
