Travis Shaw might not begin the season as the Boston Red Sox’s starting first baseman, but he’s putting together quite the audition reel this spring.

Shaw, who will compete with recently converted left fielder Hanley Ramirez for reps at first, sent the third pitch he saw Wednesday afternoon from Pittsburgh Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong into the outfield seats for a two-run home run.

The homer was the first of spring training for Shaw and his seventh hit in 12 Grapefruit League at-bats.

The 25-year-old made his major league debut last season for the Red Sox, posting a .270/.327/.487 slash line with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs in 65 games.
